


One hundred years ago marks the tenth time the Nobel Prizes were awarded according to Alfred Nobel's will. Three Nobel Laureates travelled to a wintry Stockholm to receive their medals, diplomas and the Prize amount, at that time 140 703 SEK. In Oslo, Norway, an organization, The Permanent International Peace Bureau, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 1910 PHYSICS PRIZEJohannes Diderik van der Waals was awarded for pioneering studies on the physical state of liquids and gases. His work made the study of temperatures near absolute zero possible. The “van der Waals forces”, weak attractive forces between atoms or molecules, were later named in his honour.

1910 CHEMISTRY PRIZEFrom apples to ylang-ylang, the range of scents and flavours that fill Nature's vast garden of plants are formed chiefly from specific combinations of volatile organic compounds, known collectively as essential oils. For decades the tools used in chemistry were deemed ill-equipped to untangle these complex and unstable mixtures, until Otto Wallach devised ways in which to reveal the essential virtues of plants.

1910 MEDICINE PRIZEAlbrecht Kossel worked on proteins, including the nucleic substance. In his Nobel Lecture he describes his research and findings.

1910 LITERATURE PRIZEPaul Heyse was awarded "as a tribute to the consummate artistry, permeated with idealism, which he has demonstrated during his long productive career as a lyric poet, dramatist, novelist and writer of world-renowned short stories".
